Vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants are vital to keeping us healthy—but doctors say while you can get them from what you eat, many people choose to get them from a bottle. “It’s really interesting to see how many people take supplements. They take vitamins, minerals, antioxidants. Invariably, most people are not sure why they are taking the supplements,” said Dr. Salvatore Lacagnina, an internal medicine physician with Lee Health.

In fact, doctors say many people who take supplements don’t even need them. “We should really measure the vitamin levels in your blood. Your levels of minerals, antioxidants, and such, and if you’re deficient in something then you replace exactly what you need,” he said.

If you eat a healthy diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and your body is absorbing it properly, doctors say you don’t really need additional supplements.

At least 30 million people of all ages and genders suffer from an eating disorder in the U.S., according to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD), and diagnosed cases of eating disorders in American children are on the rise. “This is partly due to better screening and more open conversation about mental health in general,” explains Heather Russo, Site Director at The Renfrew Center of Los Angeles, one of the country’s top treatment centers for eating disorders.

“We also see some stigma vanishing as social media has allowed children to openly speak about their own eating and body struggles. The difficulty facing children now is the abundance of messages about food and appearance on every screen in front of them.”

For parents of children with eating disorders, help is out there. “Parents need allies in the fight against an eating disorder,” says Russo. “They need to work with a team of skilled professionals who can address the dietary, psychological and medical needs of their child.” However, children don’t often have the ability to express what they struggle with emotionally, so parents can watch out for the silent signs of an eating disorder.

Molly Shanks has transitioned from a self-motivated, charismatic student to an Emmy-nominated television producer.

During her time at Miami, she majored in journalism with a double minor in English and communications. Following graduation in 2012, Shanks immediately moved to the Los Angeles, Calif. area to hit the ground running in the fast-paced environment of show biz.

Initially, Molly worked for Original Productions in Burbank. She served as an associate producer for a reality show called “Ax Men,” which airs on the History Channel.

After six months, she decided that her heart was still with the Midwest and moved to the Chicago area for a position at Oakbrook productions. There, she worked for a television show entitled “Chicago’s Best,” which is a food-focused program that airs on WGN. After one year, she switched over to “Living Healthy Chicago,” which is a show within the same company with a different focus.

What Is the Glycemic Index?

Carbohydrates are found in breads, cereals, fruits, vegetables and dairy products, and they are an essential part of a healthy diet.

When you eat any type of carbohydrate, your digestive system breaks it down into simple sugars that enter the bloodstream.

Not all carbohydrates are the same, as different types have unique effects on blood sugar.

The glycemic index (GI) is a measure that ranks foods according to their effect on your blood sugar levels. It was created in the early 1980s by Dr. David Jenkins, a Canadian professor (1Trusted Source).

The rates at which different foods raise blood sugar levels are ranked in comparison with the absorption of 50 grams of pure glucose, which is used as a reference food and has a GI value of 100.

The following are the three GI ratings:

  • Low: 55 or less
  • Medium: 56–69
  • High: 70 or more

Foods with a low-GI value are the preferred choice, as they are slowly digested and absorbed, causing a slower and smaller rise in blood sugar levels.

On the other hand, foods with a high GI value should be limited since they are quickly digested and absorbed, resulting in a rapid rise and fall of blood sugar levels.

It is important to note that foods are only assigned a GI value if they contain carbohydrates. Hence, foods containing no carbs, such as beef, chicken, fish, eggs, herbs and spices, won’t be found on GI lists.
